Local vs. Imported Shakespeare in South Africa

Performances of Shakespeare, from film to translations to dance adaptations, have been brought into Africa since as early as 1607. They have also grown up from within. This map follows those journeys. Annotations show where multiple productions were tracked in the same city.

This map particularly notes a flourishing of homegrown productions in Cairo, Egypt and Port Elizabeth, South Africa, both of which have had annual Shakespeare Festivals for years.
